Viñateros Bravos 'El Tunel' Itata, Chile 2016
The Itata Valley’s wine history dates back to the 16th century. That’s young compared to the 200 million-year-old mass of igneous rock (formed from cooled magma!) that defines its geology!
On this massive batholith, centuries-old bush-trained vines thrive. Leo studied around the world but settled in at home to make a very small amount of terroir-driven wine. His understanding of the region’s history and his minimalist approach yield a spectacularly elegant and expressive wine—Native yeasts, old barrels, minimal sulfur, no other additions.
This red is honest, clean, herbaceous, and delightfully easy to drink. It slays BBQ. It belongs in the backyard alongside bare feet and late summer sun. It comes from a tiny plot of Cinsault—just 0.4 hectares! One of the truest expressions of Chile I’ve found—drink it with a slight chill. 100% Cinsault Hand harvested, dry-farmed, and biodynamic. Only 120 cases made!!! This is the good shit.
