Montesecondo Chianti Classico, Tuscany Italy 2016$ 34.00
In a previous life, Silvio & Catalina Messana were New Yorkers. They’d visit the beautiful farm in Tuscany where Silvio’s mother lived and where his father had planted vines in the early 70s. The Messanas left the city to take the leap into natural farming, and Silvio built their winemaking facility by hand. The vineyards surround the farm, bathing in the sunshine all day in the heart of Chianti Classico. The wine is full of bright red fruit and dusty, countryside charm. It’s one of the purest expres- sions of Chianti on the planet, but it’s not designated. While non-Tuscan grapes and heavy oak treatments are permitted for DOCG status, an old-school wine like this has come to be considered atypical by the powers that be, and denied the right to use the Chianti name! Too bad for them. This delicious gem is entirely expressive, the essence of Tuscany in its purity and tradition.
